The first turbine of the Lai Chau hydroelectric power plant, which has a capacity of 400MW, was successfully connected to the national grid on December 14.

The entire project is expected to be completed in 2016, one year ahead of schedule.

The plant, invested by Electricity of Vietnam, is located on the Da River in Nam Hang commune, Muong Te district, Lai Chau province. It includes three turbines with a total capacity of 1,200MW which will provide over 4.67 billion kWh of electricity for the national grid each year.

The project plays an important role in providing electricity and water for the Red River Delta region in dry season and contributes to socio-economic development of the two provinces of Lai Chau and Dien Bien, as well as ensuring defence and security in the northwest region.

Along with the Hoa Binh hydroelectric power plant (1,920MW) and the Son La hydroelectric power plant (2,400MW), the completion of the Lai Chau power plant (1,200MW) will raise the total capacity of power plants on the Da River to 6,500MW, which will generate around 25 billion kWh of electricity each year worth roughly US$1.2-1.3 billon each year.
