Many areas of Soc Trang suffer from salinisation, an excess of salt in the soil – due to the impacts of climate change– especially during the dry season, causing a shortage of fresh, safe water for the population, said Deputy Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Lam Van Man.
The project, implemented from September 2013 – April 2017, has a total investment of over VND 108 billion (US$ 5.1 million), VND 55 billion (US$ 2.6 million) of which is non-refundable aid from Holland’s government.
More poor households will have access to the clean water supply network whilst help will be given to water supply companies to minimise water losses, according to the project objectives.
Furthermore, The Holland Office of Project Management will provide technical assistance to the local water sector
On the same day, construction of a water plant with a daily capacity of 10,000 cubic meters began, bringing benefits to northern and northwestern Soc Trang once completed.
