The final segment of the Nam Can Bridge, which spans the Cua Lon River and is the last bridge on the Ho Chi Minh Highway, was installed in Nam Can district, Ca Mau province on April 16.

Construction of the 3.39km long and 12m wide bridge began on August 29, 2012 and has required a total investment of VND649.1 billion (US$30.5 million), which was sourced from Government bonds.

The project, an important sub-project in the second phase of the Ho Chi Minh Highway project, consists of an 817m river crossing and 2.5km of additional roadway, and accommodates two lanes of traffic whereupon vehicles can travel at a designed speed of 80kph.

After its completion in late June 2014, the bridge will connect Nam Can district to Ngoc Hien district, the only Mekong Delta locality without a roadway leading to the district centre, finalising the entire Ho Chi Minh Highway and creating a complete traffic network that links key economic areas, industrial zones and residential areas in the southern region.

The first phase of the Ho Chi Minh Highway project, which runs 1,350km from Hanoi’s Hoa Lac to Tan Canh commune in Kon Tum province, was put into operation in late April 2008.
