The meeting was also attended by representatives from the International Cooperation Department, the Forecasting and Statistics - Monetary and Financial Stabilization Department, as well as officers from the IMF’s Resident Representative Office in Hanoi.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Governor Nguyen Ngoc Canh thanked for the IMF’s support to Vietnam over the past time, especially through the policy consultation, technical assistance and capacity building activities. The Deputy Governor hoped that the IMF would continue to support the SBV and other Vietnamese authorities in promoting the economic reforms, ensuring the macroeconomic stability and sustainable development.
On behalf of the IMF, Mr. Jochen Schmittmann congratulated the Deputy Governor on his new position and affirmed his commitment to continue working closely with the SBV and the Government of Vietnam. He said that, in his role as the IMF’s Resident Representative for Vietnam, Cambodia and Lao PDR, he would continue to promote the cooperation between the IMF and the Southeast Asian region in general and Vietnam in particular, especially in the areas of policy consultation and technical assistance in the finance and banking sector.
Sharing about Vietnam's macroeconomic situation, the Deputy Governor shared that the SBV would continue to operate the monetary policy in a proactive and flexible manner, in close collaboration with the fiscal policy in order to ensure the macro-economic stability, control the inflation and accelerate the economic growth. In the context of many uncertainties in the international economic situation, the SBV would closely monitor the global developments in order to conduct appropriate measures for the monetary policy management, ensuring the liquidity of the banking system and maintaining a stable exchange rate in order to mitigate the external risks. The Deputy Governor expressed his hope that Mr. Jochen Schmittmann and the IMF would continue to support Vietnam through the policy consultation, technical assistance and capacity building activities, contributing to the goal of a sustainable growth and maintaining the macroeconomic stability.
The Deputy Governor also proposed that the IMF implement more effectively the on-going technical assistance projects, and consider to support new capacity building projects to meet Vietnam's growing demands, especially in the fields of monetary management, banking and economic statistics.
Mr. Jochen Schmittmann affirmed that the IMF would continue to accompany the Government of Vietnam and the SBV to help Vietnam achieve the development goals set by the Government and the National Assembly, and to further strengthen the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and the IMF./.
