On March 21, 2025, at the headquarters of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), Deputy Governor Nguyen Ngoc Canh had a meeting with Ms. Mariam J. Sherman, the World Bank’s Country Director for Vietnam, Cambodia and Lao PDR. Also attending the meeting from the SBV’s side, there were representatives from the International Cooperation Department and the SBV Office.
At the meeting, Ms. Mariam J. Sherman congratulated the Deputy Governor on his new position as the SBV Deputy Governor, and concurrently as Alternate Governor representing Vietnam at the World Bank Group. Ms. Sherman believed that the Deputy Governor, with his rich experience in various past positions, would be able to further support the WB's activities in Vietnam.
In addition, Ms. Sherman also shared about the WB's activities over the past time and expressed her desire to continue supporting Vietnam in the big infrastructure projects. Ms. Sherman affirmed to further cooperate closely with the SBV, which is the representative of the Vietnamese Government at the World Bank Group.
The Deputy Governor spoke highly of the cooperation results between Vietnam and the WB over the past 30 years. The WB's support would be important to help the Government to achieve the growth target of 8% or higher in 2025. The Deputy Governor expressed his hope that the WB would share Vietnam's difficulties, and informed Ms. Sherman about the efforts of the National Assembly and the Government in resolving the discrepancies in the policies between the two sides, such as through the promulgation of the 2024 revised Law on Bidding (coming into force on January 15, 2025), the revised Law on Public Investment (coming into force on January 1, 2025), and the revised Law on the Government Organization (coming into force on January 15, 2025), as well as various important guiding documents, thereby contributing significantly to removing the existing difficulties and obstacles in the process of implementing the loan agreements with the foreign donors, ensuring effective management and use of the ODA resources and foreign preferential credit.
From her side, Ms. Sherman informed the SBV Deputy Governor about the plan for this year's Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group to discuss about several global issues, including the international economic outlooks, support for the economic development, poverty reduction, and climate change responses, etc.; and respectfully invited the SBV's leadership to attend this important event in April 2025 in Washington D.C., the USA./.
