The State Bank of Vietnam and the World Bank (WB) inked documents in Ha Noi on April 24 on a credit package of US$390 million for three projects to develop infrastructure, agriculture and livelihood in disadvantaged provinces and improve the social support system in Viet Nam.

The poverty reduction project in the central highlands will offer financial support to developing connective village and community infrastructure, training life skills, project management and public administrative management skills in 26 poorest districts in Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces. The project with a total investment of US$165 million, in which the WB lends US$150 million, will be implemented from 2014 to the end of 2019.

The project on improving irrigated agriculture will be implemented in Quang Nam, Quang Tri, Ha Tinh, Thanh Hoa, Hoa Binh, Phu Tho and Ha Giang provinces, aiming to support agricultural and rural development in a sustainable manner, responding to climate change and improving competitiveness. The US$210 million project, in which the WB grants US$180 million, will be carried out from 2014 to the end of 2020.

The third project focusing on strengthening the social assistance system in Ha Noi and Ha Giang, Quang Nam, Lam Dong and Tra Vinh provinces will be also implemented from 2014 to the end of 2019. It aims to develop a system managing and implementing social assistance programs to ensure the minimum living standards for people and contribute to sustainable poverty reduction. The WB contributes US$60 million to the project’s US$62.5 million investment.

The three projects’ capital is borrowed for a period of 25 years at a preferential interest of 1.25%.
